DRESSHIRT: CHOKER

DRESSHIRT: CHOKER

The newest addition to the DS family, the CHOKER, is inspired by the DS1 cuff. The cuffs are a fantastic part of the shirt, worn open with a great bracelet for a modern look or buttoned up elegantly in the evening. The choker is literally a cuff for your neck, edgy, menswear inspired and bold.  I wear one with black embroidery for a laid back cool.

A Word With Brian Quist

A WORD WITH: BRIAN QUIST
MEET THE VOGUE-APPROVED DIRECTOR BEHIND OUR FIRST BRAND VIDEO, @brianquist

You’ve shot some of the most beautiful women in the world? Any favorites? My first Vogue cover was with Charlize Theron at Georgia O’keeffe’s house—it was a pretty great start to shooting beautiful and powerful women! Emily Ratakoski—she has a bitching art collection! Drew Berrymore and I did Tequila shots and then discovered that we have the same tattoo.  Mila Kunis has amazing eyes and laughed at my dumb magazine questions. And Ashley Graham is deserving of all the attention – she’s easily the favorite woman I’ve worked with.

Are famous people more interesting than regular people? Definitely not. Probably the opposite.

What part of a shoot is the hardest? All the bullshit and negotiation before shooting takes place, and all the rules around what you can and cannot shoot. Once you’re on set it’s just people making art and usually a blast!

You are inspired by the women in your life. Tell us about some of them? My mom set the bar pretty high.  She has remained one of the most independent, smart and outspoken women in my life. I’ve also been fortunate to date really powerful women since I was young—and I feel like they’ve all influenced my work and my viewpoint.

What’s one thing men don’t know about women that they should? The crazy ones are the good ones.

What’s something women don’t know about men that they should? We give many fucks—it just doesn’t seem like it.

You can ask anyone one question, what would it be? Do you want to build a snowman?

Favorite thing about DRESSHIRTI think the double standard that still exists about what women can say or how they say it is a massive problem.  And both men and women perpetuate this via traditional and social media. To me DRESSHIRT is all about saying whatever you want and saying it boldly!

Word’s on your DRESSHIRT? 2 0 Sickness (it’s a Seattle thing)

Culture: The Impossible Dream

Culture: The Impossible Dream
design + dream + set sail

you’d never think that boats need wheels. But, then again, you’ve never been on The Impossible Dream. This  completely wheelchair accessible 60’ long catamaran is sailing up and down the East coast this summer showing anyone using a wheelchair that they can find their sea legs.

Deborah Mellen is Mareiclaire, DRESSHIRT’s Creative Director’s Aunt. She’s also a New York native, successful businesswoman, passionate sailor and volunteer at Shake-a-Leg Miami, and has had paraplegia for more than two decades. She is this boat’s fearless captain!

Deborah’s love of sailing led her to buy the Impossible Dream in the winter of 2013 and show the world how passion and design can overcome mainstream conceptions of disabilities. Each inch was designed by Nicky Baily, the designer of the famed London Eye carriages, and every handle, every ledge, every compartment has a purpose--not to mention a minimalist carbonfiber sheen and a fully stocked bar--(Bacardi is their summer sponsor.)

The design of the boat pushed limitations. Deborah told us that “When i was on the boat for the first time, it was the first time I was ever able to be on the bow of a boat since I was in a wheelchair. And I thought that everyone in my situation should learn to expect more from their life, should learn that society can give us more through universal design.”

The boat has sailed from Miami to Maine, from the Bahamas to Cuba, from Baltimore to Brooklyn. Along the way it has stopped at charity organizations and rehab centers and taught children and adults alike that limitations are self-conceived.

Deborah’s drive, refusal to settle, and unfailing positivity is what makes her a DRESSHIRT muse.

Hear from Deborah herself in an upcoming questionnaire.

HAPPY FOURTH

Culture: Where Not to Celebrate the Fourth

Where NOT to celebrate the Fourth (and what to wear!)
SUN + SWEAT + SOAK

July 4th is a time for tradition. A time to re-do the old and spurn the new. But at its roots, the holiday is really about the new. What’s more out of your comfort zone than starting a new Democracy after all? And since Hamilton made it trendy to care about American history, and everyone’s plying you with glossy photos telling you where you should be this weekend, we’re going to tell you where you shouldn’t. Try something you can’t find in a listicle…

Anywhere landlocked | The Fourth is about sun, sweat, and soaking. Try to find a place where there’s a trough of sorts around

What to wear while avoiding dry land | The chicest bathing suit you can find and slip on a DSDress to cover up

The Hamptons | No one actually wants to be around this many people they know. Unless you want to spend your weekend waiting in line, waiting in traffic, and waiting for a drink we suggest a less obvious geotag for your ‘murrica grams

What to wear while avoiding the Hamptons | White sneakers, ripped denim, white DSTee

Your Parents’ Place | Family is great. The same annual fourth of July BBQ with the Jonses might be what you’ve had planned all summer but at a certain point you have to ask yourself, are you going because you want to or because you haven’t read this article yet?

What to wear while avoiding your parents’ place | Sheer DSCrop, denim skirt

The United Kingdom | It might be too soon (maybe like this joke) to celebrate any independence day here..

What to wear while avoiding the UK | Anything made in the EU, like a HAT perhaps.
